Good news this last week from Utah as Republican U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz says he won’t rule out running against Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch next year. Hatch has been on the campaign trail since June of last year attempting to give himself a conservative makeover. The defeat of former Sen. Bob Bennett at the GOP convention apparently has Hatch on the offensive.
In a recent email to constituents Hatch said this about the appeals court challenge to our new health care law.
“This law is an unprecedented expansion of federal power that busts the limits the Constitution places on the federal government. The constitutional arguments against this law are on our side. Our freedoms require limits on government, and those limits do not allow Congress to dictate economic decisions rather than regulate economic activities.”
Although Hatch has done some good work in his 36 year career. Before the defeat of Mr. Bennett last year, Mr. Hatch had attempted to circumvent the Constitution by giving a seat in the U.S. House to the District of Columbia as a trade to the left for a fourth Utah seat with bill S.160. You can read more about his those antics here which were frankly uncalled for and reckless. How can the residents of Utah believe a word that comes out his mouth anymore? It seems Mr. Hatch thinks that the Constitution is only there for his political convenience, to be used as a campaign tool to play whichever side of the table he is pandering to on a given day.
Mr. Chaffetz is the most worthy opponent to date for Utah’s U.S. Senate seat up grabs next year. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope Jason throws his hat into the ring!
